Context of Haggai 2:17
15“And from now on, carefully consider this. Consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the temple of the Lord. 16When anyone came to a pile of grain ⌞to get⌟ 20 measures, there would be only 10. And when anyone came to a wine vat to draw out 50 measures, there would be only 20 in it. I infested all your work with blight and mildew and struck it with hail. But you didn’t come back to me, declares the Lord. 18Carefully consider from now on, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day when the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. Carefully consider: 19Is there any seed left in the barn? The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree still haven’t produced. But from now on I will bless you.”

The impurity of their hearts and lives shall make the work of their hands, and all their offerings, unclean before God. The case is the same with us. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1717. Appropriated from Am 4:9, whose canonicity is thus sealed by Haggai's inspired authority; in the last clause, "turned," however, has to be supplied, its omission marking by the elliptical abruptness ("yet ye not to Me!") God's displeasure. Compare "(let him come) unto Me!" Moses in excitement omitting the bracketed words (Ex 32:26). "Blasting" results from excessive drought; "mildew, from excessive moisture.Read the comment
