Context of Ezekiel 40:22
20Then the man measured the length and width of the gateway, leading to the outer courtyard. This was the gateway that faced north. 21Its three guardrooms, its recessed walls, and its entrance hall were the same size as those in the east gateway. The gateway was 87½ feet long and 44 feet wide. Its windows, recessed walls, and palm tree pictures were the same size as those in the east gateway. Seven steps went up to it and led to its entrance hall. 23The inner courtyard had a gateway opposite the north gate just like the east gateway. The man measured the distance from one gate to the other gate. It was 175 feet. 24Then the man led me to the south side, and I saw a gateway that faced south. He measured its recessed walls and its entrance hall. They were the same size as those of the other gateways.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22Steps led up to each gate. These steps made the gates feel less accessible. A person had to go up in order to enter the sacred area. The inner parts of the temple were higher than the outer parts. The more sacred the space, the higher it stood. This difference in height created another level of separation between common space and holy space. In this way, the design of the temple showed that not every place was the same. Some areas were set apart as more…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 20-2720-27. The different approaches corresponded in plan. In the case of these two other gates, however, no mention is made of a building with thirty chambers such as was found on the east side. Only one was needed, and it was assigned to the east as being the sacred quarter, and that most conveniently situated for the officiating priests.Read the comment
