Context of Ezekiel 40:22
20And the gate of the outer court, that looked toward the north, he measured its length and its breadth. 21And its chambers were three on this side and three on that side; and its posts and its projections were according to the measure of the first gate: its length was fifty cubits, and breadth five and twenty cubits. And its windows, and its projections, and its palm-trees were according to the measure of the gate that looked toward the east; and they went up to it by seven steps; and the projections thereof were before them. 23And the gate of the inner court was opposite to the gate toward the north, and toward the east; and he measured from gate to gate a hundred cubits. 24And he brought me toward the south: and behold, there was a gate toward the south; and he measured its posts and its projections according to these measures.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22Steps led up to each gate. These steps made the gates feel less accessible. A person had to go up in order to enter the sacred area. The inner parts of the temple were higher than the outer parts. The more sacred the space, the higher it stood. This difference in height created another level of separation between common space and holy space. In this way, the design of the temple showed that not every place was the same. Some areas were set apart as more…Read the comment

In the case of these two other gates, however, no mention is made of a building with thirty chambers such as was found on the east side. Only one was needed, and it was assigned to the east as being the sacred quarter, and that most conveniently situated for the officiating priests.Read the comment
