Context of Ezekiel 16:29
27“ ‘So I used my power against you. I took away some of your land, and I handed you over to your greedy enemies, the Philistines, who were ashamed of what you had done. 28“ ‘You had sex with the Assyrians because you weren’t satisfied. You still weren’t satisfied. So you increased your acts of prostitution to include the land of the merchants, the Babylonians. Even after that, you weren’t satisfied. 30“ ‘You have no will power! declares the Almighty Lord. You do everything a shameless prostitute does. 31You build your platforms at the head of every street and place your illegal worship sites in every square. Yet, you aren’t like other prostitutes, because you don’t want to be paid.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29In the land - Probably used in the restricted sense of the low lands on the coast of the western sea; occupied by Phoenician colonies. The children of Israel were brought into contact at first with pagans residing within their own borders. Then they extended their contact to foreign nations, trading and forming alliances with Chaldaea, and in so doing were attracted by the idolatries of those with whom they carried on commerce. Some render it: “with the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26-29Jerusalem eagerly sought close relationships with Egypt, Assyria, and Babylonia. These political alliances cost a great deal of money. They also failed to bring the help and protection that the leaders expected. Even if these agreements had brought clear political benefits, they would still have been wrong. They showed that Jerusalem did not trust the Lord. Instead of depending on him, the city looked to other nations for safety. These alliances also led…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2929. multiplied ... fornication in ... Canaan unto Chaldea--Thou hast multiplied thy idolatries "in Canaan" by sending "unto Chaldea" to borrow from thence the Chaldean rites, to add to the abominations already practised "in Canaan," before the carrying away of Jehoiachin to Chaldea. The name "Canaan" is used to imply that they had made Judea as much the scene of abominations as it was in the days of the corrupt Canaanites. The land had become utterly…Read the comment
