Context of 2 Timothy 4:12
10Demas has abandoned me. He fell in love with this present world and went to the city of Thessalonica. Crescens went to the province of Galatia, and Titus went to the province of Dalmatia. 11Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you. He is useful to me in my work. I’m sending Tychicus to the city of Ephesus as my representative. 13When you come, bring the warm coat I left with Carpus in the city of Troas. Also bring the scrolls and especially the parchments. 14Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will pay him back for what he did.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus - For this person, see Acts 20:4; Ephesians 6:21; Colossians 4:7. It is rather strange that the apostle should say, I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus, if Timothy was at Ephesus at this time; but it is probable that Tychicus had been sent to Ephesus some time before this, and therefore the apostle might say, though writing now to Ephesus, Tychicus have I sent, etc.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12And Tychicus - See Acts 20:4. In Ephesians 6:21, Paul calls him “a beloved brother, and faithful minister in the Lord.” But it may be asked why he did not retain him with him, or why should he have sent him away, and then call Timothy to him? The probability is, that he had sent him before he had seen reason to apprehend that he would be put to death; and now, feeling the need of a friend to be with him, he sent to Timothy, rather than to him, because…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 The love of this world, is often the cause of turning back from the truths and ways of Jesus Christ. Paul was guided by Divine inspiration, yet he would have his books. As long as we live, we must still learn. The apostles did not neglect human means, in seeking the necessaries of life, or their own instruction. Let us thank the Divine goodness in having given us so many writings of wise and pious men in all ages; and let us seek that by…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12Tychicus was apparently a Greek from Asia Minor (implied in Colossians 4:7–8, 10–11); see also Acts 20:4; Ephesians 6:21–22; Colossians 4:7–8; Titus 3:12). He was possibly going to Ephesus to deliver the letter and replace Timothy, assuming Timothy was in Ephesus.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. And--Greek, "But." Thou art to come to me, but Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus to supply thy place (if thou so willest it) in presiding over the Church there in thy absence (compare Tit 3:12). It is possible Tychicus was the bearer of this Epistle, though the omission of "to thee" is rather against this view.Read the comment
