Context of 2 Peter 2:9
7Yet, God rescued Lot, a man who had his approval. Lot was distressed by the lifestyle of people who had no principles and lived in sexual freedom. 8Although he was a man who had God’s approval, he lived among the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Each day was like torture to him as he saw and heard the immoral things that people did. Since the Lord did all this, he knows how to rescue godly people when they are tested. He also knows how to hold immoral people for punishment on the day of judgment. 10This is especially true of those who follow their corrupt nature along the path of impure desires and who despise the Lord’s authority. These false teachers are bold and arrogant. They aren’t afraid to insult the ⌞Lord’s⌟ glory. 11Angels, who have more strength and power than these teachers, don’t bring an insulting judgment against them from the Lord.

Commentaries on 2 Peter 2:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly - The preservation and deliverance of Lot gave the apostle occasion to remark, that God knew as well to save as to destroy; and that his goodness led him as forcibly to save righteous Lot, as his justice did to destroy the rebellious in the instances already adduced. And the design of the apostle in producing these examples is to show to the people to whom he was writing that, although God would destroy those…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9The Lord knoweth - That is, the cases referred to show that God is able to deliver his people when tempted, and understands the best way in which it should be done. He sees a way to do it when we cannot, though it is often a way which we should not have thought of. He can send an angel to take his tempted people by the hand; he can interpose and destroy the power of the tempter; he can raise up earthly friends; he can deliver his people completely and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials: Noah’s family and Lot show this truth (2:5; 2:7). The Lord is faithful to his people. The people Peter wrote to needed assurance that their struggles to live godly lives, while facing false teaching and the scorn of the world, would be rewarded.Read the comment
