Context of 2 Chronicles 13:19
17So Abijah and his men defeated them decisively, and 500,000 of the best men of Israel were killed. 18So the Israelites were humbled at that time, and the men of Judah won because they trusted the Lord God of their ancestors. Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured some of his cities: Bethel and its villages, Jeshanah and its villages, and Ephron and its villages. 20Jeroboam never regained power during Abijah’s time. The Lord caused Jeroboam to become sick, and Jeroboam died. 21But Abijah became strong. He married 14 wives and fathered 22 sons and 16 daughters.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19The Lord gave Judah a miraculous victory. Abijah took the areas around Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron from Israel (2 Chronicles 13:19). Along with Zemaraim (2 Chronicles 13:4), these towns in the hill country on Judah's northern border formed a geographical unit (see Joshua 18:22–23). We do not know what happened to this territory later. By the time of Amos, which was around 760 BC, Bethel was a major pagan shrine in Israel.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him--This sanguinary action widened the breach between the people of the two kingdoms. Abijah abandoned his original design of attempting the subjugation of the ten tribes, contenting himself with the recovery of a few border towns, which, though lying within Judah or Benjamin, had been alienated to the new or northern kingdom. Among these was Beth-el, which, with its sacred associations, he might be…Read the comment
