Context of 1 Kings 22:43
41Jehoshaphat, son of Asa, became king of Judah in Ahab’s fourth year as king of Israel. 42Jehoshaphat was 35 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 25 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Azubah, daughter of Shilhi. Jehoshaphat carefully followed the example his father Asa had set and did what the Lord considered right. 44But the illegal worship sites were not torn down. The people continued to sacrifice and burn incense at these worship sites. Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel. 45Isn’t everything else about Jehoshaphat—the heroic acts he did and ⌞the wars⌟ he fought—written in the official records of the kings of Judah?

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:43
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 43The high places were not taken away - In 2 Chronicles 17:6, it is expressly said, that he did take away the high places. Allowing that the text is right in 2 Chron., the two places may be easily reconciled. There were two kinds of high places in the land: Those used for idolatrous purposes. Those that were consecrated to God, and were used before the temple was built. The former he did take away; the latter he did not. But some think the parallel place in…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 43On the general piety of Asa, see above, 1 Kings 15:11-15 and references. Jehoshaphat seems to have been a still better king, for he did not, like Asa, fall away in his old age 2 Chronicles 16:2-12. The high places were not taken away - This seems to contradict 2 Chronicles 17:6. Probably the writer of Chronicles refers to the desire and intention of the monarch, while the author of Kings records the practical failure of his efforts.Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 43-44Jehoshaphat is remembered as a king who pleased the Lord. But his record was not perfect. He did not remove all the pagan shrines (see 1 Kings 15:14). He also joined with Ahab (1 Kings 22:4, 29–32; 2 Chronicles 19:1–3) and later with Joram (2 Kings 3:4–27).Read the comment
