Context of Zechariah 9:2
1The Lord speaks against the land of Hadrach, and against the city of Damascus. The Lord watches all men and all the groups of people in Israel. The Lord speaks against the country called Hamath. (It is next to the country called Hadrach.) The people in Tyre and Sidon cities are very wise. But the Lord also speaks against them. 3Tyre's people have built strong walls to keep enemies out. They have swept up rich metals like dirt. They have swept up gold like dirt in the streets. 4The Lord will take away all the things that Tyre's people have. And he will remove their ships from the sea. Fire will burn every part of the city.

Commentaries on Zechariah 9:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2And Hamath also shall border thereby - Hamath on the river Orontes; and Tyre and Sidon, notwithstanding their political wisdom, address, and cunning, shall have a part in the punishment. These prophecies are more suitable to the days of Jeremiah than to those of Zechariah; for there is no evidence - although Alexander did take Damascus, but without bloodshed - that it was destroyed from the times of Zechariah to the advent of our Lord. And as Tyre and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2And Hamath also shall border thereby - oNear to it in place and character, it shall share its subdual. After the betrayal of Damascus, Parmenio was set over all Syria. “The Syrians, not as yet tamed by the losses of war, despised the new empire, but, swiftly subdued, they did obediently what they were commanded.” And Zidon - Zidon, although probably older than Tyre, is here spoken of parenthetically, as subordinate. Perhaps, owing to its situation, it was…Read the comment

They often appear together in biblical texts (for example, Ezra 3:7; Joel 3:4; Luke 10:13–14). These cities were famous for their maritime trade wealth. However, Old…Read the comment

Maurer understands "which"; "Hamath, which borders on Damascus, also shall be the resting-place of Jehovah's wrath" (the latter words being supplied from Zec 9:1).
