Context of Romans 8:21
19The whole universe that God has made now waits for something great to happen. Everything is waiting with hope to find out who God's children really are. 20God has caused everything in the universe to lose its purpose. It did not choose to be like that. It was God who decided that it should be like that. Then it could hope for something better in a future time. At that time, the universe will not continue to become worse and worse, as it does now. It will become free from that power. It will be free to enjoy great things from God, as God's children are also free. 22We know that everything in the universe is still in great pain now. Everything cries together in pain, like a woman who is ready to have a baby. 23It is the same for us who are believers. We have received God's Spirit as the first of his gifts to us, but we also cry inside ourselves. We are waiting for the time when God will finish his great work. Then we will belong to him completely as his children. Our bodies will be free from the power of sin.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Because the creature - This and the preceding verse should be thus connected: in hope That (̔ ) the creature itself also shall be delivered. The word denotes, very frequently, sinful corruption. So, 2 Peter 1:4; : Corruption through lust, . 2 Corinthians 11:3; : Lest your minds should be corrupted. 1 Corinthians 15:33; : Evil communications corrupt good manners. The sense, therefore, of the apostle in this place seems to be: the Gentile world shall, in…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21Because - This is the ground of his hope, and this sustains him now. It is the purpose of God that deliverance shall be granted, and this supports the Christian amidst the trials to which he is subjected here. The hope is, that this same renewed man shall be delivered from all the toils, and cares, and sins of this state. The creature itself - The very soul that is renewed; the ransomed man without essential change. It will be the same being, though…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-25Verses 18-25 The sufferings of the saints strike no deeper than the things of time, last no longer than the present time, are light afflictions, and but for a moment. How vastly different are the sentence of the word and the sentiment of the world, concerning the sufferings of this present time! Indeed the whole creation seems to wait with earnest expectation for the period when the children of God shall be manifested in the glory prepared for them. There…Read the comment
