Context of Romans 2:22
20You are sure that you can teach fools and people who do not know very much. You know that God's Law tells you everything about what is true. Because it helps you to know so much, you think that you can be a great teacher! 21So you teach other people, do you? But do you teach yourself? You tell other people, ‘Do not rob anyone.’ But maybe you yourself rob other people. You say, ‘People must not have sex with anyone who is not their wife or their husband.’ But maybe you yourself have sex in a wrong way. You say that you hate idols. But do you rob places where people worship idols? 23You are proud that you know God's Law. But you do not obey that Law. As a result, you cause other people to speak against God. 24This is written in the Bible: ‘Because of you Jews, the Gentiles say bad things against God.’

Commentaries on Romans 2:22
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Dost thou commit adultery? - There is no doubt that this was a crime very common among the Jews; see the Matthew 12:39 note; John 8:1-11 notes. The Jewish Talmud accuses some of the most celebrated of their Rabbies, by name, of this vice. (Grotius.) Josephus also gives the same account of the nation. Thou that abhorrest idols - It was one of the doctrines of their religion to abhor idolatry. This they were everywhere taught in the Old Testament; and this…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-24Verses 17-24 The apostle directs his discourse to the Jews, and shows of what sins they were guilty, notwithstanding their profession and vain pretensions. A believing, humble, thankful glorying in God, is the root and sum of all religion. But proud, vain-glorious boasting in God, and in the outward profession of his name, is the root and sum of all hypocrisy. Spiritual pride is the most dangerous of all kinds of pride. A great evil of the sins professors…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22do you rob temples?: Old Testament law prohibited Jews from having anything to do with pagan idols (see Deuteronomy 7:26). Pagans were those who worshiped false gods, and idols were hand-made representations of these false gods. But first-century AD Jews did not always follow this law. Sometimes they stole idols and used or sold the valuable metals from which the pagans made the idols.Read the comment
