Context of Revelation 18:12
10They will stand a long way from the city because they are afraid. They do not want to suffer in the same way. They will say, ‘Terrible trouble has come to you, Babylon! Great city! Powerful city! It is very bad for you! In one single hour God has destroyed you!’ 11The traders of this world will also be very sad. They will weep because nobody will buy their things any more. They sold many expensive things like these: Things made from gold and silver. Valuable stones and pearls. Good linen and other kinds of expensive cloth that is red or purple. Things made from wood that has a nice smell. Many different things that are made from ivory. Many kinds of things that people had made from expensive wood, from different metals and from stone. 13Different kinds of spice and incense, like myrrh and frankincense. Wine, olive oil, expensive flour and wheat. Cows and sheep. Horses and chariots. Human slaves. 14The people who sold these things will say to the city, ‘You have now lost all the good things that you wanted so much. You have lost all those expensive things that made you beautiful. You will never have them again.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12The merchandise of gold, and silver, etc. - The same author, Bishop Bale, who was once a priest of the Romish Church, goes on to apply all these things to that Church; and whether the text have this meaning or not, they will show us something of the religious usages of his time, and the real mockery of this intolerant and superstitious Church. Speaking in reference to the Reformation, and the general light that had been diffused abroad by the word of God…Read the comment

And precious stones - Diamonds, emeralds, rubies, etc. These have always been important articles of traffic in the world, and, of course, most of the traffic in them would find its way to great commercial cities. And pearls - See the notes on Matthew 7:6; Matthew 13:46. These, too, have been always, and were, particularly in early times…Read the comment

The kings of the earth, whom she flattered into idolatry, allowing them to be tyrannical over their subjects, while obedient to her; and the merchants, those who trafficked for her indulgences, pardons, and honours; these mourn. Babylon's friends partook her sinful pleasures and profits, but are not willing to share her plagues. The spirit of antichrist is…Read the comment
