Context of Psalms 23:5
3He gives me new strength in my life. He is my guide to the right paths. He does this to give honour to his name. 4I may walk through a valley that is as dark as death. But I will not be afraid of any danger. This is because you are with me, Lord. Your stick and your shepherd's pole protect me from danger. You prepare a big meal for me while my enemies watch. You put olive oil on my head. You bless me so much that my cup is completely full. 6I am sure that you will always be good to me. You will love me all the days of my life. That will never change. I will live in the Lord's house for as long as I live.

Commentaries on Psalms 23:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Thou preparest a table before me - Here the second allegory begins. A magnificent banquet is provided by a most liberal and benevolent host; who has not only the bounty to feed me, but power to protect me; and, though surrounded by enemies, I sit down to this table with confidence, knowing that I shall feast in perfect security. This may refer to the favor God gave the poor captive Israelites in the sight of the Chaldeans who had grievously treated them…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Thou preparest a table - The image is now changed, though expressing the general idea which is indicated in the first verse of the psalm, “I shall not want.” The evidence or proof of this in the previous verses is, that God was a shepherd, and would provide for him as a shepherd does for his flock; the evidence here is that God had provided a table, or a feast, for him in the very presence of his enemies, and had filled his cup with joy. The word “table”…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5A feast shows the Lord’s care and mercy for his people (see Psalm 22:26, 29). Enemies may watch, but they cannot disturb the guests. The ritual of anointing the head with oil honored guests (Psalm 92:9–11), and provided hospitality and refreshment (104:15; 133:2).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-65-6. Another figure expresses God's provided care. a table--or, "food," anointing oil--the symbol of gladness, and the overflowing cup--which represents abundance--are prepared for the child of God, who may feast in spite of his enemies, confident that this favor will ever attend him. This beautiful Psalm most admirably sets before us, in its chief figure, that of a shepherd, the gentle, kind, and sure care extended to God's people, who, as a shepherd…Read the comment
