Context of Job 36:16
14They die while they are still young. Their lives finish in shame. They live among the male prostitutes who serve false gods. 15But God rescues people who suffer. He uses their troubles to teach them about himself. God has called you out of your troubles, Job. He wants you to live in a safe place where you have no problems. He wants you to have a comfortable life with plenty of good food to eat. 17But now you have a lot of trouble, because God is punishing you as wicked people deserve. God is right and fair to judge you like that. 18Be very careful! Do not let anyone use their riches to deceive you. Do not let them pay you a lot of money to do something that is wrong.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16Even so would he have removed thee - That is, if you had been patient and resigned, and if you had gone to him with a broken heart. Having stated the “principles” in regard to affliction which he held to be indisputable, and having affirmed that God was ever ready to relieve the sufferer if he would apply to him with a proper spirit, it was natural to infer from this that the reason why Job “continued” to suffer was, that he did not manifest a proper…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-23Verses 15-23 Elihu shows that Job caused the continuance of his own trouble. He cautions him not to persist in frowardness. Even good men need to be kept to their duty by the fear of God's wrath; the wisest and best have enough in them to deserve his stroke. Let not Job continue his unjust quarrel with God and his providence. And let us never dare to think favourably of sin, never indulge it, nor allow ourselves in it. Elihu thinks Job needed this…Read the comment
