Context of Proverbs 17:22
20Anyone who thinks about bad things will not do well in life. Anyone who deceives people with lies will have a lot of trouble. 21To have a foolish son makes parents sad. The father of a fool is never happy. If you are happy in life, you will be healthy. But if you are sad and upset, your body will be weak. 23Wicked judges secretly accept bribes. Then they are not fair when they judge. 24A person who knows what is right can easily find wisdom. But a foolish person looks everywhere and never finds it.

Commentaries on Proverbs 17:22
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22A merry heart doeth good like a medicine - Instead of גהה gehah, a medicine, it appears that the Chaldee and Syriac had read in their copies גוה gevah, the body, as they translate in this way. This makes the apposition here more complete: "A merry heart doeth good to the body; but a broken spirit drieth the bones." Nothing has such a direct tendency to ruin health and waste out life as grief, anxiety, fretfulness, bad tempers, etc. All these work death.Read the comment
