Context of Matthew 27:10
8After this, it was called ‘The Field of Blood’. It is still called that even today. 9So the words that the prophet Jeremiah wrote long ago now became true. He had said, ‘Then they took the 30 silver coins. It was the amount of money the people of Israel had agreed to pay for the man. They used this money to buy the pot-maker's field. The Lord God had told me to do this.’ 11Now Jesus stood in front of the Roman ruler, Pilate. The ruler asked Jesus, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Jesus replied, ‘You have said it.’ 12The leaders of the priests and the important Jews spoke against Jesus. They said that he had done many bad things. Jesus did not answer them.

Commentaries on Matthew 27:10
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10And gave them - In Zechariah it is, I gave them. Here it is represented as being given by the priests. The meaning is not, however, different. It is, that this price “was given” for the potter‘s field. As the Lord appointed me - That is, “commanded” me. The meaning of the place in Zechariah is this: He was directed to go to the Jews as a prophet - a pastor of the people. They treated him, as they had done others, with great contempt. He asks them to give…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: The quote is from Zechariah 11:12–13. Matthew might have followed the Jewish tradition of naming books by the first book in the scroll. In this case, Jeremiah would be the first book in the scroll containing Zechariah. Or, Matthew might be referencing similar passages in Jeremiah (Jeremiah 19:1–13; 18:2–6; 32:6–15) along with Zechariah 11:12–13. Matthew notices a strong similarity between…Read the comment
