Mark 13:36
36When he arrives, he may surprise you. He may even find you asleep!
Mark 13:36 in other versions
Context of Mark 13:36
34It is like when a man begins a journey. Before the master leaves his house, he gives authority to his servants. He tells each servant about the work that he should do. Then he tells the servant at the door to watch for his master's return. 35So you must watch carefully. You do not know when the master of the house will come back. He might arrive in the evening, or in the middle of the night. Or he might arrive early in the morning, or just before the sun rises. When he arrives, he may surprise you. He may even find you asleep! 37I am saying this to you. I am also saying this to everyone else. Always be ready!’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36He find you sleeping - A porter asleep exposes the house to be robbed, and well deserves punishment. No wonder that the man is constantly suffering loss who is frequently off his guard. Our Lord shows us in this parable: That himself, ascended to heaven, is the man gone from home. That believers collectively are his family. That his servants are those who are employed in the work of faith and labor of love. That the porter represents the ministers of his…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-37Verses 28-37 We have the application of this prophetic sermon. As to the destruction of Jerusalem, expect it to come very shortly. As to the end of the world, do not inquire when it will come, for of that day and that hour knoweth no man. Christ, as God, could not be ignorant of anything; but the Divine wisdom which dwelt in our Saviour, communicated itself to his human soul according to the Divine pleasure. As to both, our duty is to watch and pray. Our…Read the comment
