Context of Job 5:16
14In the middle of the day, it becomes dark for those people. At midday, they see no better than blind people. 15He saves poor people when wicked people attack them. He rescues weak people from the power of strong people. So poor people can hope for justice. Wicked people have to be quiet. 17If Almighty God warns you to do what is right, he has blessed you. So do not be upset when he decides to do that. 18He may cause you to have pain, but he will make you well again. He may hurt you, but he will also give you health.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16So the poor - דל dal, he who is made thin, who is wasted, extenuated; hath hope - he sees what God is accustomed to do, and he expects a repetition of gracious dealings in his own behalf; and because God deals thus with those who trust in him, therefore the mouth of impiety is stopped. Religion is kept alive in the earth, because of God's signal interventions in behalf of the bodies and souls of his followers.Read the comment

They are permitted to regard God as their protector and friend, and to look forward to another and a better world. This sentiment accords with all that is elsewhere said in the Scriptures, that the offers of mercy are specially made to the poor, and that they are especially the objects of the divine compassion. And iniquity stoppeth her mouth…Read the comment

The difference between prosperity and adversity is not so exactly observed, as that between day and night, summer and winter; but it is according to the will and counsel of God. We must not attribute our afflictions to fortune, for they are from God; nor our sins to fate, for they are from ourselves. Man is born in sin, and therefore born to trouble…Read the comment
