Context of Job 5:14
12He stops the ideas of clever people. They cannot do what they want to do. 13When wise people try to do clever things, he causes those things to give them trouble. He quickly stops their clever ideas. In the middle of the day, it becomes dark for those people. At midday, they see no better than blind people. 15He saves poor people when wicked people attack them. He rescues weak people from the power of strong people. 16So poor people can hope for justice. Wicked people have to be quiet.

Commentaries on Job 5:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14They meet with darkness in the daytime - God confounds them and their measures; and, with all their cunning and dexterity, they are outwitted, and often act on their own projects, planned with care and skill, as if they had been the crudest conceptions of the most disordered minds. They act in noonday as if the sun were extinct, and their eyes put out. Thus does God "abate their pride, assuage their malice, and confound their devices."Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14They meet with darkness in the day-time - Margin, “run into;” compare the notes at Isaiah 59:10. The sense is, that where there is really no obstacle to the accomplishment of an honest plan - any more than there is for a man to walk in the day-time - they become perplexed and embarrassed, as much as a man would be, should sudden darkness come around him at mid-day. The same sentiment occurs in Job 12:25. A life of honesty and uprightness will be attended…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-16Verses 6-16 Eliphaz reminds Job, that no affliction comes by chance, nor is to be placed to second causes. The difference between prosperity and adversity is not so exactly observed, as that between day and night, summer and winter; but it is according to the will and counsel of God. We must not attribute our afflictions to fortune, for they are from God; nor our sins to fate, for they are from ourselves. Man is born in sin, and therefore born to trouble…Read the comment
