Context of Job 36:16
14They die while they’re young, or they live on as male prostitutes in the temples of idols. 15He rescues suffering people through their suffering, and he opens their ears through distress. “Yes, he lured you away from the jaws of trouble into an open area where you were not restrained, and your table was covered with rich foods. 17But you are given the judgment evil people deserve. A fair judgment will be upheld. 18Be careful that you are not led astray with riches. Don’t let a large bribe turn you ⌞to evil ways⌟.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16Even so would he have removed thee - That is, if you had been patient and resigned, and if you had gone to him with a broken heart. Having stated the “principles” in regard to affliction which he held to be indisputable, and having affirmed that God was ever ready to relieve the sufferer if he would apply to him with a proper spirit, it was natural to infer from this that the reason why Job “continued” to suffer was, that he did not manifest a proper…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-23Verses 15-23 Elihu shows that Job caused the continuance of his own trouble. He cautions him not to persist in frowardness. Let not Job continue his unjust quarrel with God and his providence. And let us never dare to think favourably of sin, never indulge it, nor allow ourselves in it.
