Context of Job 33:21
19Or God may warn people with a painful illness. He may make their bodies hurt all the time. 20Then they do not want to eat anything. They cannot eat even the best food. Their bodies become very thin. People can even see their bones. 22They will soon die and go to their graves. Death is waiting to take them away. 23But perhaps an angel may come to help one of those people. He may speak on behalf of God, as a special angel among the many thousands of God's angels. The angel may tell that person how to live in a way that is right.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen - He wastes away. His flesh, once vigorous, beautiful, and fair, now disappears. This is not a mere description of the nature of his sickness, but it is a description of the disciplinary arrangements of God. It is an important part of his affliction, as a part of the discipline, that his flesh vanishes, and that his appearance is so changed that he becomes repulsive to the view. And his bones that were…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-28Verses 19-28 Job complained of his diseases, and judged by them that God was angry with him; his friends did so too: but Elihu shows that God often afflicts the body for good to the soul. This thought will be of great use for our getting good from sickness, in and by which God speaks to men. Pain is the fruit of sin; yet, by the grace of God, the pain of the body is often made a means of good to the soul. When afflictions have done their work, they shall…Read the comment
