Context of Isaiah 5:9
7Israel's nation is like the vineyard of the Lord Almighty. Judah's people are his beautiful garden. But when the Lord looked there for justice, he found only murder! When he looked for people who were righteous, he saw that they were cruel. 8It will be very bad for you people who buy many houses for yourselves. You also buy land to join to the land that you already have. Then there is no more land left for anyone else. You are the only people who remain on the land. I have heard the Lord Almighty promise this: ‘All these great, beautiful houses will certainly become empty. There will be nobody to live in them. 10Large vineyards will give only a few bottles of wine. If you plant ten bags of seed, you will only get one bag of grain as your harvest.’ 11It will be bad for you people who like to get up early to start drinking. You continue to drink late into the night, until you are very drunk.

Commentaries on Isaiah 5:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9In mine ears. "To mine ear" - The sentence in the Hebrew text seems to be imperfect in this place; as likewise in Isaiah 22:14; (note), where the very same sense seems to be required as here. See the note there; and compare 1 Samuel 9:15; (note). In this place the Septuagint supply the word , and the Syriac אשתמע eshtama, auditus est Jehovah in auribus meis, i.e., נגלה niglah, as in Isaiah 22:14. Many houses - This has reference to what was said in the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9In mine ears - This probably refers to the prophet. As if he had said, God has revealed it to me,‘ or God has said in my ears,‘ i. e, to me. The Septuagint reads it, These things are heard in the ears of the Lord of hosts,‘ that is, the wishes” of the man of avarice. The Chaldee, The prophet said, In my ears I have heard; a decree has gone from the Lord of hosts,‘ etc. Many houses shall be desolate - Referring to the calamities that should come upon the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-23Verses 8-23 Here is a woe to those who set their hearts on the wealth of the world. Not that it is sinful for those who have a house and a field to purchase another; but the fault is, that they never know when they have enough. Covetousness is idolatry; and while many envy the prosperous, wretched man, the Lord denounces awful woes upon him. How applicable to many among us! God has many ways to empty the most populous cities. Those who set their hearts…Read the comment
