Context of Isaiah 5:9
7For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house (nation) of Israel And the men of Judah are His delightful planting [which He loves]. So He looked for justice, but in fact, [He saw] bloodshed and lawlessness; [He looked] for righteousness, but in fact, [He heard] a cry of distress and oppression. 8Woe (judgment is coming) to those who join house to house and join field to field [to increase their holdings by depriving others], Until there is no more room [for others], So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land! In my ears the Lord of hosts said, “Be assured that many houses will become desolate, Even great and beautiful ones will be unoccupied. 10For ten acres of vineyard will yield [only] one bath of wine, And a homer (six bushels) of seed will produce [only] one ephah of grain.” 11Woe (judgment is coming) to those who rise early in the morning to pursue intoxicating drink, Who stay up late in the night till wine inflames them!

Commentaries on Isaiah 5:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9In mine ears. "To mine ear" - The sentence in the Hebrew text seems to be imperfect in this place; as likewise in Isaiah 22:14; (note), where the very same sense seems to be required as here. See the note there; and compare 1 Samuel 9:15; (note). In this place the Septuagint supply the word , and the Syriac אשתמע eshtama, auditus est Jehovah in auribus meis, i.e., נגלה niglah, as in Isaiah 22:14. Many houses - This has reference to what was said in the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9In mine ears - This probably refers to the prophet. As if he had said, God has revealed it to me,‘ or God has said in my ears,‘ i. e, to me. The Septuagint reads it, These things are heard in the ears of the Lord of hosts,‘ that is, the wishes” of the man of avarice. The Chaldee, The prophet said, In my ears I have heard; a decree has gone from the Lord of hosts,‘ etc. Many houses shall be desolate - Referring to the calamities that should come upon the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-23Verses 8-23 Here is a woe to those who set their hearts on the wealth of the world. Not that it is sinful for those who have a house and a field to purchase another; but the fault is, that they never know when they have enough. Covetousness is idolatry; and while many envy the prosperous, wretched man, the Lord denounces awful woes upon him. How applicable to many among us! God has many ways to empty the most populous cities. Those who set their hearts…Read the comment
