Context of Hosea 9:17
15The Lord says, ‘They started to do evil things at Gilgal. It was there that I began to hate them. Because they do evil things, I will chase them out of my land. I will not love them any more. Their leaders have all turned against me. 16Ephraim's people are very sick. They are like a plant that has dry roots and it gives no fruit. Even if they give birth to children that they love very much, I will kill those children.’ My God will not accept them as his people, because they have not obeyed him. They will have no home of their own. They will have to live among different nations.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17My God will cast them away - Here the prophet seems to apologize for the severity of these denunciations; and to vindicate the Divine justice, from which they proceeded. It is: - Because they did not hearken unto him - That "my God," the fountain of mercy and kindness, "will cast them away." And they shall be wanderers among the nations - And where they have wandered to, who can tell? and in what nations to be found, no man knows. Wanderers they are; and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-17Verses 11-17 . God departs from a people, or from a person, when he withdraws his goodness and mercy from them; and when the Lord is departed, what can the creature do? Even though, for the present, good things seem to remain, yet the blessing is gone if God is gone. Even the children should perish with the parents. The Divine wrath dries up the root, and withers the fruit of all comforts; and the scattered Jews daily warn us to beware, lest we neglect or…Read the comment
