Context of Hosea 1:9
7But I will continue to love the people of Judah. I will save them from the power of their enemies. I will not use weapons to do this in a battle. I will not use an army, or horses, or chariots. Instead, it will be the power of the Lord their God that saves them.’ 8After Lo-Ruhamah stopped drinking Gomer's milk, Gomer became pregnant again. She gave birth to another son. Then the Lord said, ‘Call him Lo-Ammi. This is because you Israelites are not my people. I am not your God.’ 10In the future, nobody will be able to count the number of Israel's people. They will be as much as the sand on the shore of the sea. God has said to them, ‘You are not my people.’ But at that time, he will say to them, ‘You are children of the God who lives!’ 11Then the people of Judah and the people of Israel will come together again. They will choose a single leader to rule them. They will return to live in their own land. They will know that the day of Jezreel is a great day.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Call his name Lo-ammi - עמי לא Lo -ammi, "Not my people;" for which the reason is immediately given: Ye are not my people, and I will not be your God - The word God is not added here by any of the ancient versions or MSS.; and yet the construction absolutely requires it, as Houbigant properly observes, who thinks the present reading לכם אהיה לא lo eheyeh lachem, "I will not be to you," a corruption of the word אלחיכם eloheychem, "your God." It is strange…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Call his name Lo-ammi - that is, “not My people.” The name of this third child expresses the last final degree of chastisement. As the “scattering by God” did not involve the being wholly “unpitied;” so neither did the being wholly “unpitied” for the time involve the being wholly rejected, so as to be no more His people. There were corresponding degrees in the actual history of the kingdom of Israel. God withdrew his protection by degrees. Under Jeroboam…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-11Verses 8-11 The rejection of Israel for a time, is signified by the name of another child: call him Lo-ammi, "not my people." The Lord disowns all relation to them. We love him, because he first loved us; but our being cast out of covenant, is owing to ourselves and our folly. Mercy is remembered in the midst of wrath; the rejection, as it shall not be total, so it shall not be final. The same hand that wounded, is stretched forth to heal. Very precious…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9The name Lo-ammi delivers the harshest judgment because it suggests the end of Israel's covenant with the Lord. The title "my people," given to Israel when they obeyed the Lord their God (Leviticus 26:12; see also Exodus 6:7), was now taken away due to their clear unfaithfulness. I am not your God: The Hebrew phrase can be translated as I am not ‘I Am’ for you (compare Exodus 3:14). The third child's name prophetically states that the Israelites are…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Lo-Ammi--once "My people," but henceforth not so (Eze 16:8). The intervals between the marriage and the successive births of the three children, imply that three successive generations are intended. Jezreel, the first child, represents the dynasty of Jeroboam I and his successors, ending with Jehu's shedding the blood of Jeroboam's line in Jezreel; it was there that Jezebel was slain, in vengeance for Naboth's blood shed in the same Jezreel (1Ki 16:1…Read the comment
