Context of Genesis 1:9
7So God made this wide space. He made the water under the space separate from the water that was above it. What God said happened. 8God called the wide space ‘sky’. Evening passed and then it was morning. That was the second day. God said, ‘The water that is under the sky will come together in one place. Then dry ground will appear.’ And what God said happened. 10God called the dry ground ‘land’. He called the water that had come together ‘sea’. God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good. 11Then God said, ‘The land will cause plants to grow. There will be plants with their seeds and trees with their fruits. Each kind of plant and tree will have its own seeds and fruits.’ And what God said happened.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Let the waters … be gathered into one place: Other ancient cultures considered the sea to be a hostile force. It removed these boundaries and returned the earth to chaos (7:1–24).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-139. let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place--The world was to be rendered a terraqueous globe, and this was effected by a volcanic convulsion on its surface, the upheaving of some parts, the sinking of others, and the formation of vast hollows, into which the waters impetuously rushed, as is graphically described (Psa 104:6-9) [Hitchcock].
