Context of Genesis 1:10
8God called the wide space ‘sky’. Evening passed and then it was morning. That was the second day. 9God said, ‘The water that is under the sky will come together in one place. Then dry ground will appear.’ And what God said happened. God called the dry ground ‘land’. He called the water that had come together ‘sea’. God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good. 11Then God said, ‘The land will cause plants to grow. There will be plants with their seeds and trees with their fruits. Each kind of plant and tree will have its own seeds and fruits.’ And what God said happened. 12All kinds of plants and trees began to grow in the ground. The plants made seeds. The trees made fruits with seeds in them. Each plant made its own kind of seeds. God looked at what he had made. He saw that it was good.

Though the use of them is allowed to man, they are from God, and to his service and honour they must be used. The earth, at his command, brings forth grass, herbs, and fruits. God must have the glory of all the benefit we receive from the produce of the earth. If we have, through grace, an interest in Him who is the Fountain, we may rejoice…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Let the waters … be gathered into one place: Other ancient cultures considered the sea to be a hostile force. Genesis shows God further controlling chaos by setting specific boundaries for the sea (see study note on 1:2). The flood was an act of God’s judgment (6:7). It removed these boundaries and returned the earth to chaos (7:1–24).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-139. let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place--The world was to be rendered a terraqueous globe, and this was effected by a volcanic convulsion on its surface, the upheaving of some parts, the sinking of others, and the formation of vast hollows, into which the waters impetuously rushed, as is graphically described (Psa 104:6-9) [Hitchcock]. Thus a large part of the earth was left "dry land," and thus were formed oceans, seas…Read the comment
