Context of Exodus 15:9
7With your powerful authority, you killed your enemies. You were very angry with them. You killed them, like a fire burns dry grass. 8You blew on the water and it became like a wall. The deep waters stood up in a big heap. The enemy said, “We will go after them. We will catch them. We will destroy them with our swords. We will do whatever we want to them. We will take all their valuable things for ourselves.” 10But Lord, you blew on the waters so that the sea covered your enemies. They went down like heavy metal in the great waters. 11Lord, there is nobody like you among all the gods! There is nobody like you anywhere! You are great and holy. Everyone should respect you and praise you. You do great miracles. There is nobody like you!

Commentaries on Exodus 15:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9The enemy said - As this song was composed by Divine inspiration, we may rest assured that these words were spoken by Pharaoh and his captains, and the passions they describe felt, in their utmost sway, in their hearts; but how soon was their boasting confounded? "Thou didst blow with thy wind, and the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters!"Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment

They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out.
