Context of Exodus 15:9
7With your unlimited majesty, you destroyed those who attacked you. You sent out your burning anger. It burned them up like straw. 8With a blast from your nostrils, the water piled up. The waves stood up like a dam. The deep water thickened in the middle of the sea. “The enemy said, ‘I’ll pursue them! I’ll catch up with them! I’ll divide the loot! I’ll take all I want! I’ll use my sword! I’ll take all they have!’ 10Your breath blew the sea over them. They sank like lead in the raging water. 11“Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you? You are glorious because of your holiness and awe-inspiring because of your splendor. You perform miracles.

Commentaries on Exodus 15:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9The enemy said - As this song was composed by Divine inspiration, we may rest assured that these words were spoken by Pharaoh and his captains, and the passions they describe felt, in their utmost sway, in their hearts; but how soon was their boasting confounded? "Thou didst blow with thy wind, and the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters!"Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-271. Then sang Moses and the children of Israel--The scene of this thanksgiving song is supposed to have been at the landing place on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, at Ayoun Musa, "the fountains of Moses." They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out. But the line of the people would be extended during the passage, and one extremity of it would reach as far north as these…Read the comment
