Ephesians 2:9
9He has not saved you as a result of any good things that you have done. So nobody has any reason to be proud about it.
Ephesians 2:9 in other versions
Context of Ephesians 2:9
7He wanted to show, for all future time, how very kind he is. He has helped us so much because of what Christ Jesus has done. 8When you believed in Jesus, God saved you because he is very kind. You could not save yourselves, but that is God's gift to you. He has not saved you as a result of any good things that you have done. So nobody has any reason to be proud about it. 10It is God who has worked in us to make us what we are. He has given us a new life because we are united with Christ Jesus. He saved us so that now we can do good things in our lives. Those are good things that he has already prepared for us to do. 11So you who were born as Gentiles should remember what you were like before. Jews insulted you because nobody has circumcised you. They themselves are proud that men have circumcised them as God's people.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9This is a brief summary of how a person is saved. A key belief of the good news about Jesus is that people are made righteous by trusting in Christ. They are not made righteous by their own efforts (see Romans 1:16–17; 3:24–25; Galatians 2:16; compare John 3:16, 36). Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done (see Romans 3:21–4:8; 9:16; Galatians 3:2–10; 5:1–6; compare 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 3:5). Salvation is for those who trust only Christ…Read the comment
