Context of 2 Kings 19:22
20Then Amoz's son Isaiah sent this message to Hezekiah: ‘The Lord, Israel's God, says, “I heard your prayer to me about Sennacherib, the king of Assyria.” 21This is the Lord's reply. The Lord says this about King Sennacherib: “The holy people of Zion laugh at you! They think that you are useless. Yes, the people of Jerusalem shake their heads as you run away. Who do you think it is that you have insulted? Who have you shouted at? Who have you looked at so proudly? The answer is the Holy God of Israel! 23You have sent your servants to insult the Lord God. You have said, ‘I have taken all my chariots and I have gone up high mountains, the highest mountains in Lebanon. I have cut down its tall cedar trees, and I have cut down its best pine trees. I went up to its highest places, and I went far into its forests. 24I dug wells in other countries, and they gave me water to drink. My army marched through all the rivers in Egypt, and the rivers became dry.’

Commentaries on 2 Kings 19:22
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22The Holy One of Israel - This is a favorite phrase with Isaiah, in whose prophecies it is found 27 times, while it occurs five times only in the rest of Scripture Psalm 71:22; Psalm 78:41; Psalm 89:18; Jeremiah 50:29; Jeremiah 51:5. Its occurrence here is a strong proof - one among many - of the genuineness of the present passage, which is not the composition of the writer of Kings, but an actual prophecy delivered at this time by Isaiah.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 All Sennacherib's motions were under the Divine cognizance. God himself undertakes to defend the city; and that person, that place, cannot but be safe, which he undertakes to protect. The invasion of the Assyrians probably had prevented the land from being sown that year. The next is supposed to have been the sabbatical year, but the Lord engaged that the produce of the land should be sufficient for their support during those two years. As…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-28The phrase Virgin Daughter is often used to describe a city or nation (Isaiah 23:12; 37:22; 47:1; Jeremiah 18:13). Here, it means that just as a young woman is saved from danger, God will save Jerusalem. The Lord's response came as a "taunt song," a common ancient Near Eastern literary form that celebrated an enemy's defeat (see Isaiah 14:3–20).Read the comment
