Context of 2 Corinthians 2:6
4When I wrote that letter, I was very sad and upset. I cried a lot. I did not want to make you sad. Instead, I wanted you to know that I love you very much. 5Someone among you has done things that have made other people sad. That person has made me sad. But really he has made all of you much more sad than me. I do not want to say more about this than is necessary. Most of you have agreed to punish him. That should be enough. 7Now, you should forgive him. You should comfort him. If you do not do that, he may become too sad. He may not be able to think properly. 8So I tell you this: Please show him that you really do love him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Sufficient to such a man is this punishment - That is, the man has already suffered sufficiently. Here he gives a proof of his parental tenderness towards this great transgressor. He had been disowned by the Church; he had deeply repented; and now the apostle pleads for him.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Sufficient to such a man - The incestuous person who had been by Paul‘s direction removed from the church. The object of Paul here is to have him again restored. For that purpose he says that the punishment which they had inflicted on him was “sufficient.” It was: (1)A sufficient expression of the evil of the offence, and of the readiness of the church to preserve itself pure; and, (2)It was a sufficient punishment to the offender. It had accomplished all…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-11Verses 5-11 The apostle desires them to receive the person who had done wrong, again into their communion; for he was aware of his fault, and much afflicted under his punishment. Even sorrow for sin should not unfit for other duties, and drive to despair. Not only was there danger last Satan should get advantage, by tempting the penitent to hard thoughts of God and religion, and so drive him to despair; but against the churches and the ministers of…Read the comment

After Paul's severe but tearful letter, the church condemned the man's behavior and disciplined him (2:6). The man repented, so now it was time to forgive and comfort him, as Paul had already done.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. Sufficient--without increasing it, which would only drive him to despair (2Co 2:7), whereas the object of the punishment was, "that (his) spirit might be saved" in the last day. to such a man--a milder designation of the offender than if he had been named [Meyer]. Rather, it expresses estrangement from such a one who had caused such grief to the Church, and scandal to religion (Ac 22:22; 1Co 5:5). this punishment--His being "delivered to Satan for the…Read the comment
