Context of 1 Samuel 7:15
13That is how the Israelites won the fight against the Philistines. The Philistines did not attack Israel land again. All the time that Samuel was alive, the Lord stopped the Philistines from attacking Israel. 14The Israelites took back the towns and the land that the Philistines had taken from them. These towns were between Ekron and Gath. Also, the Israelites and the Amorites did not fight against each other. Samuel continued to be the leader of the Israelites while he was alive. 16Every year, he travelled to Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah. In all those towns he was a judge for the Israelite people. 17But he always returned to his home at Ramah. He was a judge for the Israelite people there too. He built an altar in Ramah to worship the Lord there.

Commentaries on 1 Samuel 7:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life - Samuel is supposed to have lived one hundred years; he did not begin to judge Israel till he was about forty years of age; and if he was one hundred years of age when he died, he must have been a judge sixty years, and consequently filled that office during the whole of Saul's reign. But that he had been dead before Saul's last battle, is evident from the transactions of that king with the witch of En-dor…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Samuel judged Israel - The repetition of the phrase in 1 Samuel 7:16-17, in connection with Samuel‘s circuit, is a proof that it is his civil judgeship which is meant. The military leadership of course belonged to Saul, when he became king.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-17Verses 13-17 In this great revival of true religion, the ark was neither removed to Shiloh, nor placed with the tabernacle any where else. This disregard to the Levitical institutions showed that their typical meaning formed their chief use; and when that was overlooked, they became a lifeless service, not to be compared with repentance, faith, and the love of God and man.Read the comment
