Context of 1 Samuel 7:15
13So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israel’s territory again. The Lord’s hand was against the Philistines all of Samuel’s life. 14The cities from Ekron to Gath, which they had taken from Israel, were restored; Israel even rescued their surrounding territories from Philistine control. There was also peace between Israel and the Amorites. Samuel judged Israel throughout his life. 16Every year he would go on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah and would judge Israel at all these locations. 17Then he would return to Ramah because his home was there, he judged Israel there, and he built an altar to the Lord there.

Commentaries on 1 Samuel 7:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life - Samuel is supposed to have lived one hundred years; he did not begin to judge Israel till he was about forty years of age; and if he was one hundred years of age when he died, he must have been a judge sixty years, and consequently filled that office during the whole of Saul's reign. But that he had been dead before Saul's last battle, is evident from the transactions of that king with the witch of En-dor…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Samuel judged Israel - The repetition of the phrase in 1 Samuel 7:16-17, in connection with Samuel‘s circuit, is a proof that it is his civil judgeship which is meant. The military leadership of course belonged to Saul, when he became king.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-17Verses 13-17 In this great revival of true religion, the ark was neither removed to Shiloh, nor placed with the tabernacle any where else. This disregard to the Levitical institutions showed that their typical meaning formed their chief use; and when that was overlooked, they became a lifeless service, not to be compared with repentance, faith, and the love of God and man.Read the comment
