Context of 1 Kings 8:54
52I pray that you will carefully watch over me, your servant. Please answer my prayers and the prayers of your people, the Israelites. Whenever we pray to you, please listen to us. 53From all the nations of the world you chose Israel to belong to you as your special people. Almighty Lord, this is what you promised to your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt.’ So Solomon finished all his prayers and everything that he wanted to ask the Lord for. He had been down on his knees with his hands lifted up towards the sky in front of the Lord's altar. Now he stood up. 55When he stood up, he asked God to bless all the people in Israel. He said with a loud voice, 56‘Praise the Lord as he deserves! He has given his people, the Israelites, a safe place to live, as he has promised to do. Every great promise that the Lord gave to his servant Moses has now happened!

Commentaries on 1 Kings 8:54
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 54If the prayer of Solomon be, as it has all the appearance of being, a genuine document of the time, preserved in the archives to which the authors of both Kings and Chronicles had access, all theories of the late origin of Deuteronomy must be regarded as baseless. While references are not infrequent to other portions of the Pentateuch, the language of the prayer is mainly modelled upon Deuteronomy, the promises and threats contained in which are…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 54-61Verses 54-61 Never was a congregation dismissed with what was more likely to affect them, and to abide with them. What Solomon asks for in this prayer, is still granted in the intercession of Christ, of which his supplication was a type. We shall receive grace sufficient, suitable, and seasonable, in every time of need. No human heart is of itself willing to obey the gospel call to repentance, faith, and newness of life, walking in all the commandments of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 54-56Solomon praised God's faithfulness and goodness to Israel for giving them rest as promised (see Joshua 21:43–45; 23:14; 2 Samuel 7:1). Some Israelites did not accept the rest that only God provides (Psalm 95:10–11; Hebrews 3:7–19; 4:1–11).Read the comment
