Context of Matthew 26:26
24The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born. 25And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it I, Rabbi? He says to him, Thou hast said. And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken [the] bread and blessed, broke [it] and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 27And having taken [the] cup and given thanks, he gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it. 28For this is my blood, that of the [new] covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26As they were eating - Either an ordinary supper, or the paschal lamb, as some think. See the observations at the end of this chapter. Jesus took bread - Of what kind? Unleavened bread, certainly, because there was no other kind to be had in all Judea at this time; for this was the first day of unleavened bread, ( Matthew 26:17;), i.e. the 14th of the month Nisan, when the Jews, according to the command of God, ( Exodus 12:15-20; Exodus 23:15; Exodus…Read the comment

Matthew 26:26 As they were eating - As they were eating the paschal supper, near the close of the meal. Luke adds that he said, just before instituting the sacramental supper, “With desire have I desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.” This is a Hebrew manner of expression, signifying “I have greatly desired.” He had desired it, doubtless: (1)that he might…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-30Verses 26-30 This ordinance of the Lord's supper is to us the passover supper, by which we commemorate a much greater deliverance than that of Israel out of Egypt. Take, eat; accept of Christ as he is offered to you; receive the atonement, approve of it, submit to his grace and his government. Meat looked upon, be the dish ever so well garnished, will not nourish; it must be fed upon: so must the doctrine of Christ. This is my body; that is, spiritually…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26Deuteronomy 16:3 calls the unleavened bread of the Passover (see Exodus 12:18) the "bread of affliction." This is because it symbolizes the hardships in Egypt. During the Passover meal, the traditional blessing over the bread is: "Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth."Read the comment
