Context of Matthew 10:9
7And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh. 8Heal [the] infirm, [raise the dead], cleanse lepers, cast out demons: ye have received gratuitously, give gratuitously. Do not provide yourselves with gold, or silver, or brass, for your belts, 10nor scrip for the way, nor two body coats, nor sandals, nor a staff: for the workman is worthy of his nourishment. 11But into whatsoever city or village ye enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there remain till ye go forth.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass, in your purses - , in your Girdles. It is supposed that the people of the east carry their money in a fold of their girdles. This is scarcely correct: they carry it in a purse in their bosom, under their girdles. This I have often observed. In a thousand instances an apostolic preacher, who goes to the wilderness to seek the lost sheep, will be exposed to hunger and cold, and other inconveniences; he must…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 See also Mark 6:8-11, and Luke 9:3-5. In both these places the substance of this account is given, though not so particularly as in Matthew. The general subject is the instructions given to the apostles. Matthew 10:9 Provide neither gold nor silver, nor brass - This prohibition of gold, silver, and brass is designed to prevent their providing money for their journey. Pieces of money of “small value” were made of brass. In your purses…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-15Verses 5-15 The Gentiles must not have the gospel brought them, till the Jews have refused it. This restraint on the apostles was only in their first mission. Wherever they went they must proclaim, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. They preached, to establish the faith; the kingdom, to animate the hope; of heaven, to inspire the love of heavenly things, and the contempt of earthly; which is at hand, that men may prepare for it without delay. Christ gave…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Jesus' disciples should trust God to provide (6:11, 25–34; 7:7–11). They should avoid greed, which could harm God's reputation. They should also encourage new communities to provide what their leaders need (see 1 Corinthians 9:3–19).Read the comment
