Context of Mark 2:13
11To thee I say, Arise, take up thy couch and go to thine house. 12And he rose up straightway, and, having taken up his couch, went out before [them] all, so that all were amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it thus. And he went out again by the sea, and all the crowd came to him, and he taught them. 14And passing by, he saw Levi the [son] of Alphaeus sitting at the tax-office, and says to him, Follow me. And he rose up and followed him. 15And it came to pass as he lay at table in his house, that many tax-gatherers and sinners lay at table with Jesus and his disciples; for they were many, and they followed him.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-17Verses 13-17 Matthew was not a good character, or else, being a Jew, he would never have been a publican, that is, a tax-gatherer for the Romans. However, Christ called this publican to follow him. With God, through Christ, there is mercy to pardon the greatest sins, and grace to change the greatest sinners, and make them holy. A faithful, fair-dealing publican was rare. And because the Jews had a particular hatred to an office which proved that they were…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-15Levi was also called Matthew (see Matthew 9:9–10). Certain people are known by two names in the New Testament (for example, Simon is also called Peter; Saul is also called Paul; Judas son of James is also called Thaddaeus, see study note on Mark 3:18). This type of tax collector (Greek telōnēs) collected sales taxes, customs, and road tolls, unlike those who collected the poll tax (12:14). Other Jews disliked local tax collectors like Levi because they…Read the comment
