Context of Mark 10:7

5And Jesus answering said to them, In view of your hard-heartedness he wrote this commandment for you; 6but from [the] beginning of [the] creation God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be united to his wife, 8and the two shall be one flesh: so that they are no longer two but one flesh. 9What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.

Mark 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband - It would seem, from this, that a woman, among the Jews, had the power of separating herself from her husband, yet this right is not given her by the law of Moses. There is not, however, any positive evidence that females often claimed or exercised this right. Cases had occurred, indeed, in which it had been done…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-9God allowed divorce because people’s hearts were hard, meaning they would not obey God. But the passages that Jesus quotes from the law of Moses show God’s true plan for marriage (Genesis 1:27; 2:23–24; see also Malachi 2:16). These passages show that God values marriage. In marriage, a man and woman form a new union, and the two become one. People should not go against God’s will by separating what God has joined together.Read the comment
