Context of John 4:45
43But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee, 44for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country. When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast. 46He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick. 47He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked [him] that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-54Verses 43-54 The father was a nobleman, yet the son was sick. Honours and titles are no security from sickness and death. The greatest men must go themselves to God, must become beggars. The nobleman did not stop from his request till he prevailed. But at first he discovered the weakness of his faith in the power of Christ. It is hard to persuade ourselves that distance of time and place, are no hinderance to the knowledge, mercy, and power of our Lord…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-45Unlike many people in Jerusalem, the Galileans welcomed Jesus when he came to them. However, their welcome was based on amazement at his miracles (see 2:23–25). They were impressed by what he did. This response was not yet true faith. True faith trusts in who Jesus is, not only in the signs and wonders he performs.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4545. received--welcomed Him. having seen ... at the feast--proud, perhaps, of their Countryman's wonderful works at Jerusalem, and possibly won by this circumstance to regard His claims as at least worthy of respectful investigation. Even this our Lord did not despise, for saving conversion often begins in less than this (so Zaccheus, Lu 19:3-10). for they also went--that is, it was their practice to go up to the feast.Read the comment
