Context of Acts 16:9
7having come down to Mysia, they attempted to go to Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; 8and having passed by Mysia they descended to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a certain Macedonian man, standing and beseeching him, and saying, Pass over into Macedonia and help us. 10And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go forth to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to announce to them the glad tidings. 11Having sailed therefore away from Troas, we went in a straight course to Samothracia, and on the morrow to Neapolis,

Commentaries on Acts 16:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9A vision appeared to Paul in the night - Whether this was in a dream, or whether a representation made to the senses of the apostle, we cannot tell. A man of Macedonia appeared to him, and made this simple communication, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. Some suppose that the guardian angel of Macedonia appeared to St. Paul in a human shape; others, that it was a Divine communication made to his imagination in a dream.Read the comment

Whether this was in a dream, or whether it was a representation made to the senses while awake, it is impossible to tell. The will of God was at different times made known in both these ways.
