Context of Mark 8:2
1In those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He called the disciples and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance.” 4His disciples answered him, “Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to feed these people?”

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3The last mention of a large crowd was during the feeding of the 5,000 (6:34). Jesus showed compassion in 6:34 because the people were "like sheep without a shepherd." These stories show the concern Jesus has for the whole person. Here, he especially focuses on their hunger. They were in the wilderness and had no food (8:1,4). They had been with Jesus for three days without food and had traveled a long way (8:2). They needed to eat before going home (8:3).Read the comment
