Commentaries on Luke 24:52
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 52They worshipped him - Let it be observed that this worship was not given by way of civil respect, for it was after he was parted from them, and carried back into heaven, that they offered it to him; but acts of civil respect are always performed in the presence of the person. They adored him as their God, and were certainly too much enlightened to be capable of any species of idolatry. Returned to Jerusalem with great joy - Having the fullest proof that…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 52They worshipped him - The word “worship” does not “always” denote religious homage. See the notes at Matthew 2:11. Compare Luke 14:10. But here it is to be remarked, 1.That they offered this worship to an “absent” Saviour. It was “after” he left them and had vanished out of their sight. It was, therefore, an act of religion, and was the “first” religious homage that was paid to Jesus after he had left the world. 2.If “they” worshipped an absent Saviour…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 50-53Verses 50-53 Christ ascended from Bethany, near the Mount of Olives. There was the garden in which his sufferings began; there he was in his agony. Those that would go to heaven, must ascend thither from the house of sufferings and sorrows. The disciples did not see him rise out of the grave; his resurrection could be proved by their seeing him alive afterwards: but they saw him ascend into heaven; they could not otherwise have a proof of his ascension…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 50-53Luke also tells about the ascension of Jesus (his return to heaven) in Acts 1:1–11. For Luke, this event showed that God had: vindicated Jesus (proved that he was right), exalted him (lifted him to the highest place), and seated him at his right hand as Messiah (God’s chosen king) and Lord (the one with full authority; Acts 2:24–36). From this place of glory and authority in heaven, Jesus leads and guides his church.Read the comment
