Context of Luke 14:8
6They could find no answer to these things. 7He told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they would choose the best places for themselves: “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t sit in the place of honor, because a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by your host. 9The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place. 10“But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-14Verses 7-14 Even in the common actions of life, Christ marks what we do, not only in our religious assemblies, but at our tables. We see in many cases, that a man's pride will bring him low, and before honour is humility. Our Saviour here teaches, that works of charity are better than works of show. But our Lord did not mean that a proud and unbelieving liberality should be rewarded, but that his precept of doing good to the poor and afflicted should be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The response of Jesus comments on a teaching found in Proverbs 25:6–7. In that passage, wisdom warns people not to take places of honor for themselves. Instead, they should wait to be invited to a higher place. When Jesus gave his response, he applied this wisdom to his own time. He taught that people should not seek honor for themselves. Instead, they should be humble and allow God or others to honor them.Read the comment
