Context of Job 35:9
7If you are righteous, what do you give him, or what does he receive from your hand? 8Your wickedness affects a person like yourself, and your righteousness, a son of man. People cry out because of severe oppression; they shout for help because of the power of the mighty. 10But no one asks, “Where is God my Maker, who provides us with songs in the night, 11who gives us more understanding than the animals of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the sky?”

Commentaries on Job 35:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9By reason of the multitude - Or rather, "From among the multitude" the oppressed clamor, יזעיקו yaziku : they shout, ישועו yeshavveu, because of the mighty. The wicked rich oppress the wicked poor; these cry aloud because of their oppressors; but they have no relief, because they call not upon God.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry - It is not quite easy to see the connection which this verse has with what goes before, or its bearing on the argument of Elihu. It seems however, to refer to the “oppressed in general,” and to the fact, to which Job had himself adverted Job 24:12, that people are borne down by oppression and that God does not interpose to save them. They are suffered to remain in that state of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Job complained that God did not regard the cries of the oppressed against their oppressors. This he knew not how to reconcile the justice of God and his government. Elihu solves the difficulty. Men do not notice the mercies they enjoy in and under their afflictions, nor are thankful for them, therefore they cannot expect that God should deliver them out of affliction. He gives songs in the night; when our condition is dark and melancholy…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. (Ec 4:1.) Elihu states in Job's words (Job 24. 12; 30. 20) the difficulty; the "cries" of "the oppressed" not being heard might lead man to think that wrongs are not punished by Him.Read the comment
