Context of Isaiah 40:29
27Jacob, why do you say, and Israel, why do you assert, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my claim is ignored by my God”? 28Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never becomes faint or weary; there is no limit to his understanding. He gives strength to the faint and strengthens the powerless. 30Youths may become faint and weary, and young men stumble and fall, 31but those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not faint.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29He giveth power to the faint - To his weak and feeble people. This is one of his attributes; and his people, therefore, should put their trust in him, and look to him for aid (compare 2 Corinthians 12:9). The design of this verse is to give consolation to the afflicted and down-trodden people in Babylon, by recalling to their minds the truth that it was one of the characteristics of God that he ministered strength to those who were conscious of their own…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-31Verses 27-31 The people of God are reproved for their unbelief and distrust of God. Let them remember they took the names Jacob and Israel, from one who found God faithful to him in all his straits. And they bore these names as a people in covenant with Him. Many foolish frets, and foolish fears, would vanish before inquiry into the causes. It is bad to have evil thoughts rise in our minds, but worse to turn them into evil words. What they had known, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29In this context, the weak are those who face persecution or oppression, like during the exile in Babylon. The Lord is their only help (see Isaiah 49:4–5; 50:4; Psalms 68:9; 119:28).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2929. Not only does He "not faint" (Is 40:28) but He gives power to them who do faint. no might ... increaseth strength--a seeming paradox. They "have no might" in themselves; but in Him they have strength, and He "increases" that strength (2Co 12:9).Read the comment
