Context of Genesis 19:8
6Lot went out to them at the entrance and shut the door behind him. 7He said, “Don’t do this evil, my brothers. Look, I’ve got two daughters who haven’t been intimate with a man. I’ll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want to them. However, don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof.” 9“Get out of the way!” they said, adding, “This one came here as an alien, but he’s acting like a judge! Now we’ll do more harm to you than to them.” They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door. 10But the angels reached out, brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Behold now, I have two daughters - Nothing but that sacred light in which the rights of hospitality were regarded among the eastern nations, could either justify or palliate this proposal of Lot. A man who had taken a stranger under his care and protection, was bound to defend him even at the expense of his own life. In this light the rights of hospitality are still regarded in Asiatic countries; and on these high notions only, the influence of which an…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-9Lot strongly opposed the men’s plan to harm his guests. He spoke against their wicked actions. Over time, he became closely tied to the city, and its influence shaped his life.Read the comment
