Context of Genesis 19:8
6Lot went outside to them, shutting the door behind him. 7He said, “No, my brothers! Don’t act so wickedly! Look, I have two daughters who have never had sexual relations with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do to them whatever you please. Only don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.” 9“Out of our way!” they cried, and “This man came to live here as a foreigner, and now he dares to judge us! We’ll do more harm to you than to them!” They kept pressing in on Lot until they were close enough to break down the door. 10So the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house as they shut the door.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Behold now, I have two daughters - Nothing but that sacred light in which the rights of hospitality were regarded among the eastern nations, could either justify or palliate this proposal of Lot. A man who had taken a stranger under his care and protection, was bound to defend him even at the expense of his own life. In this light the rights of hospitality are still regarded in Asiatic countries; and on these high notions only, the influence of which an…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-9Lot strongly opposed the men’s plan to harm his guests. He spoke against their wicked actions. Over time, he became closely tied to the city, and its influence shaped his life.Read the comment
