Context of Luke 21:5
3“Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” As some of the disciples were remarking how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, Jesus said, 6“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” 7“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Goodly stones - Or, costly stones. It has been thought by some that this relates not so much to the stones of which the temple was built, as to the precious stones with which it was decorated. For an account of the stones of the temple, see on Mark 13:1; (note). And gifts - Or, consecrated things, . properly signifies a thing consecrated to sacred uses: signifies a thing devoted to a curse, or to destruction. They both come from the same root, , I lay up…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-28Verses 5-28 With much curiosity those about Christ ask as to the time when the great desolation should be. He answers with clearness and fulness, as far as was necessary to teach them their duty; for all knowledge is desirable as far as it is in order to practice. Though spiritual judgements are the most common in gospel times, yet God makes use of temporal judgments also. Christ tells them what hard things they should suffer for his name's sake, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5adorned with beautiful stones: Herod the Great rebuilt and restored the temple in Jerusalem, producing one of the great structures of the ancient world. According to the historian Josephus, the massive white stones reflected the sun with such brilliance that from a distance the temple looked like snow-covered mountains (War 5.5.6). The memorial decorations were probably funded by offerings given by worshipers to fulfill vows.Read the comment
