Context of Isaiah 53:9
7He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. 8By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who among them considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due? And they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper in his hand. 11He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9With the rich in his death "With the rich man was his tomb" - It may be necessary to introduce Bishop Lowth's translation of this verse before we come to his very satisfactory criticisms: - And his grave was appointed with the wicked; But with the rich man was his tomb: Although he had done no wrong, Neither was there any guile in his mouth. Among the various opinions which have been given on this passage, I have no doubt in giving my assent to that which…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And he made his grave with the wicked - Jerome renders this, Et dabit impios pro sepultura et divitem pro morte sua. The Septuagint renders it, I will give the wicked instead of his burial ( ̓̀ ͂ ͂ anti tēs taphēs ), and the rich in the place, or instead of his death‘ ( ̓̀ ͂ ́ anti tou thanatou ). The Chaldee renders it, He will deliver the wicked into Gehenna, and the rich in substance who oppress, by a death that is destructive, that the workers of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-9Verses 4-9 In these verses is an account of the sufferings of Christ; also of the design of his sufferings. It was for our sins, and in our stead, that our Lord Jesus suffered. We have all sinned, and have come short of the glory of God. Sinners have their beloved sin, their own evil way, of which they are fond. Our sins deserve all griefs and sorrows, even the most severe. We are saved from the ruin, to which by sin we become liable, by laying our sins…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9no violence, nor was any deceit: See 1 Peter 2:21–25. with a rich man in His death (see Matthew 27:57–61): Although the Bible often views riches as a blessing from God, it frequently condemns the rich as dishonest and oppressive. The point here might be ironic: This good man would be buried with oppressors.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Rather, "His grave was appointed," or "they appointed Him His grave" [Hengstenberg]; that is, they intended (by crucifying Him with two thieves, Mt 27:38) that He should have His grave "with the wicked." Compare Joh 19:31, the denial of honorable burial being accounted a great ignominy (see on Is 14:19; Jr 26:23). and with ... rich--rather, "but He was with a rich man," &c.
